Most problems associated with oil heat is due to lack of maintenance, and several can be taken care of by you the home owner if you have a limited knowledge of the system. Caution: often times when an oil furnace fails to heat it still feeds a large amount of fuel into the combustion chamber. extreme care should be taken to insure there is no oil in the combustion chamber before attempting to start an oil furnace. if you do not feel 100% confident in your abilities to service this equipment you should leave it to a professional. should you choose to attempt it yourself then you should check the following areas.

Look into the combustion chamber with a flash light to see if there is fuel in the bottom, if so most likely the problem is air in the fuel line, dirty nozzle or ignition failure due to bad transformer, improperly aligned electrodes, or water in the fuel tank. if the combustion chamber is dry then you are either out of fuel, have a clogged fuel filter, tank valve is turned off, or fuel pump is bad.
