Gas Heat

Many problems associated with gas heat are minor problems that can be solved by you the home owner. below is a list of things you should check before calling a service company.

My furnace is doing nothing at all In most localities it is required by code that there be an emergency switch located near the furnace and another one in the living area if the furnace is located in an attic or crawl space. This is a normal electrical switch with a red cover on it. this is the first thing you should check if your furnace is doing nothing at all, then check the furnace breaker or fuse to insure it is not tripped (breaker) or Blown (fuse) if neither of these conditions exist check the doors on the furnace to make sure they are securely in place. once you have determined that the Emerg. switch is on and the breaker or fuse is not blown or tripped, and the doors are in place then you have eliminated most of the user serviceable problems associated with the typical gas furnace. if you still have no heat then call (757) 875-1200 for service.

Flame only burns for a minute or so: if your furnace flame burns only for a minute or so then cuts off for several minutes while the fan continues to run it is most likely due to lack of air flow across the heat exchanger. check your filter if you don't know where your filter is then this is definitely the problem. your filter is either inside of the furnace cabinet, or in the return grill inside of the house. most manufacturers recommend changing your air filter every thirty days. if your filter is clean then call (757)875-1200 for service.

Blowing cold air: if your gas furnace is blowing cold air and is a standing pilot model furnace, check to see that the pilot is lit. if not follow the pilot lighting instructions on the furnace. if pilot is lit then check to make sure the gas valve is in the ON position, if pilot is lit and gas valve is on then call (757)875-1200 for service.

If you have a problem that is not mentioned above it most likely is not a user serviceable problem and you should call (757)875-1200 for service.
