Air Conditioning

As with all electrically operated devices if nothing is working check the circuit breaker or fuss. with an air conditioning system you have at least two different circuit interrupters. one for the outside unit and one for the inside unit. if nothing is working inside or out start with the breaker or fuss for the furnace or if you have a gas or oil furnace you also have an emergency switch located near the furnace. this is a normal electrical switch with a red cover. this switch must be one for any operation to take place sense the control voltage for the system originates in the furnace. if you have electric forced air heat you may  have a disconnect located near the furnace, and the disconnect may contain addition fusses or breakers.

if the fan is blowing but not cooling check first to see if the outside unit is running. if it is running, check the freon lines going into the unit, is the large line covered with ice? if so put your thermostat switch in the off position and the fan in the on position, then check your air filter if the filter is dirty to the point that air can't move through it freely then replace it and wait several hours for the ice to melt off of the inside coil. you may hear large chunks of ice falling inside the furnace as they melt, don't panic just let the fan run until you are sure all the ice is gone and you have a good flow of air coming out of the vents. once your are sure the ice is melted then put the system switch back in the cool position and try it be sure to check the line outside in about an hour after you go back to cool to see if it is frosted again if so, cut it off and call (757)875-1200 for service. if it is not running then check the breaker or fuse for the "air conditioner" if you have fuses the fuse for the air conditioner will be a cartridge type fuse and will not be checkable visually, you must use a multi-meter, an ohm meter, or simply replace the fuses with fuses of the same size that you know to be good. if you still have no A/C after checking the fuses, visually inspect the low voltage line going to the outside unit. typically this line is a small gauge wire that is not inside of a protective cover. the insulation on the wire is most often brown. if this wire looks like it has been chewed on by an animal or caught in a weed eater then it most likely has, and that is the problem. do not attempt to repair or even touch this wire. if the two wires inside touch together it will burn out your transformer and cost you more money. call (757)875-1200 for service.

Water leaking from inside unit: this problem is very common and in most cases can be solved by the home owner quickly and easily. this problem is most always caused by algae build up in the drain. you will need a wet/dry vacuum cleaner to fix the problem and it will come in handy cleaning up all that water on the floor. take the wet dry vac outside to where your A/C normally drains connect the vacuum to the end of the drain line and turn it on. if there are two line do them both. you will have to seal around the end of the house with your hand so the vacuum pulls through the drain line instead of around it, but you should see or feel the water come through the hose when it breaks loose. sense most units have insulation in them that has now become saturated you will probably still get some water on the floor for the next day or so but it should be at a much lessor rate then before. if not or if water continues to leak for more then a day then call (757)875-1200 for service.
